What Is IKIM?

The Initiative for Knowledge and Innovation in Manufacturing (IKIM) is a national manufacturing initiative housed within the Microphotonics Center (MphC), MIT’s hub for interdisciplinary photonics research. IKIM serves as a bridge between foundational research and real-world application. While MphC focuses on early-stage R&D and collaborative roadmapping, IKIM translates these advances into workforce training, commercialization strategies, and industrial readiness.

America’s Manufacturing Challenge

Between 2000 and 2010, the U.S. lost nearly a third of its manufacturing jobs. While innovation has thrived in software and tech, U.S. firms have increasingly operated on a system of “innovate here/produce there,” leaving behind skilled jobs and industrial capacity. Rebuilding American manufacturing strength demands renewed investment in advanced technologies like 3D printing, photonics, and robotics, as well as the workforce needed to deploy and sustain them. IKIM was created to meet this challenge by strengthening education, accelerating technology transfer, and helping to shape the future of manufacturing in the U.S.
